Skype is the most popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and instant messenger program, according to the Procallz website. The program enables users to chat, talk and video-conference for free with one another. The program also allows users to call landlines and mobile phones for a fee. Fees vary by country. Skype is available for download in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) for free by visiting Skype.com. The program can also be downloaded in Arabic, the official language of the UAE.
Instructions
1. Visit Skype.com, click on "Get Skype." Download the appropriate version of Skype (for Mac or Windows). Install the program by double-clicking the install file and following the on-screen installation prompts. Skype will automatically detect the location of the user downloading the software and redirect her to a local language page. For example, if a person from the UAE visits Skype.com, she will be redirected to the Arabic Skype homepage and download an Arabic version of the software. This language setting can always be changed at the bottom of every page on Skype's site.
2. Create a Skype account. The program encourages users to enter in as many personal details as possible. Only a user name and password are required, however. Users do not have to enter any personal information that they do not want to.
3. Configure the program. After creating an account, the program will automatically direct the user to a setup wizard. Follow the instructions to configure the microphone and webcam. Neither of these is required to use the program, but will be necessary for voice and video calling.
