The Nokia N Gage QD cell phone comes "locked" for exclusive use with your service provider. This discourages people from switching companies when their contracts expire for fear of losing the use of their phone. In general, cell phones that use SIM cards may be unlocked relatively easily. You need the proper unlock code. Many websites offer online or freeware software that generates the proper unlock code for the various models of Nokia cell phones. Other companies sell the codes and deliver the code via e-mail.
Instructions
Using Online or Freeware Code Generators
1. Dial *#06# on the phone to display the International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) number. This number is unique to every phone and is required to calculate the unlock code.
2. Navigate to an online Nokia unlock code generation website or download and install the freeware program (see resources). Launch the program from the desktop shortcut or "Start" menu after installation.
3. Enter the details about the phone in the proper fields. The required fields are: IMEI, service provider name, country and phone model.
4. Click the "Calculate" or "Continue" button to generate the code.
5. Remove the SIM card and turn on the phone.
6. Type in the unlock code and press "Accept" to unlock the phone.
