Printers To A Pc

Windows makes it convenient to add new printers to your PC.

There are two types of printers you can add to your PC. The first is a local printer, or a printer with a cord that connects to your PC. The second is a wireless network printer, which you might find in an office setting. With Windows 7, you can add a new printer with just a few mouse clicks.

Instructions

Adding a Local Printer

1. Plug the printer into your computer. If the printer is a newer model with a USB connection, Windows should detect the printer and install its drivers automatically.

2. If the printer uses the serial or parallel port and Windows does not detect it, you will have to install it manually. Click on the Start menu, and select "Devices and Printers."

3. Click "Add a Printer" to open the "Add Printer" wizard. Click "Add a Local Printer."

4. Select the "Use an Existing Port" and the recommended printer port buttons; then click "Next."

5. Select the printer's manufacturer and model; then click "Next." Windows will download and install the recommended drivers. If your printer is not on the list, perform a Windows Update to check for additional drivers, or click "Have Disk" and browse to the folder where the driver is located.

Adding a Network Printer

6. Click on the Start menu, and select "Devices and Printers"; then click "Add a Printer" to open the "Add Printer" wizard. Click "Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer."

7. Select your printer from the list of available printers; then click "Next."

8. If prompted, click "Install driver" to install the printer driver on your computer. Click "Next" after the Wizard confirms driver installation. Click "Finish" to close the Wizard.

Removing a Printer

9. Click on the Start menu, and select "Devices and Printers."

10. Select the printer you wish to remove on the list; then right-click it and select "Remove device." Click "Yes."

11. You may need administrative access to delete a printer. If so, right-click the printer and click "Run as administrator"; then click "Remove device" and then "Yes."
