Alltel phones come with a SIM card, also known as a Subscriber Identification Module. As a means of offsetting the deep discounts that cell phone companies offer their customers on cell phones, they use these chips to ensure that you and other customers will use only their service. By entering an unlock code, your Alltel phone can be used with any cell phone service, including Verizon. The unlock code enables your cell phone to receive a signal from any provider.

1. Contact the Alltel customer service center.
2. Ask for an unlock code and be ready to give your IMEI number, which can be found in the battery housing.
3. Type in the unlock code using the cell phone keys. You will not require a SIM card if you live in the U.S. because Verizon does not use SIM cards in the U.S. If you live outside of the U.S. and Canada, however, you will need to install a Vodafone SIM card, which you can obtain through Verizon.
4. Test the phone by making a call.
