Call Internationally

Make an international call to family and friends.

Since we are living in a global community, many of us have friends and family all over the world. To make an international call, you should have an international calling plan on your phone or an international calling card. If using a calling card, make sure to follow the instructions on the back of your card. In most instances, you will be required to call a toll-free number listed on the card, then enter the PIN listed on the card when prompted. After that you may begin dialing the international number.

Instructions

1. Dial the international call prefix. The prefix for initiating a call outside of the United States is 011.

2. Enter the country code of the country you are dialing. Each country requires that you dial a different code. The country code for Belgium, for instance, is 32. The country code for Mexico is 52. (To look up country codes, see Resources.)

3. Dial the international city code. The city code is no different from a U.S. area code, except that some international city codes may be two digits long rather than three. (To look up city codes, see Resources.)

4. Follow the city code with the actual phone number of the person or business you are calling. All together, your international call to, for instance, Durango, Mexico, may look like this: 011-52-618-3434939.
