Unlock Motorola Razr Software

Unlocking your Motorola RAZR's software allows you to use it with a SIM card from any GSM network.

The Motorola RAZR is a flip-top phone with a thin design that came out in 2004. Mobile service providers will often sell these phones at a discount and lock the software on them, thus preventing their subscribers from using their phone with a different service. To change services, you will need to get your Motorola RAZR's software unlocked.

Instructions

1. Remove the battery from your RAZR and look for a sticker marked IMEI beneath it. There is a 15-digit code typed out on it. Write down the code. This is the serial number of your phone. You will need it to create an unlock code.

2. Choose an a site to purchase your unlocking codes from. (See Resources.) Using a code is the easiest way to unlock your phone's software because it requires very little technical expertise. As of 2010, a code costs between $20 to $35.

3. Open your computer's Internet browser and go to an unlocking site. Enter your IMEI number, choose Motorola as the phone's "Make" and RAZR as the "Model," from the drop-down menu.

Provide your Paypal or credit card information, along with a valid email address, and click the "Submit" button. You will receive a code via email in a day or two. Once you have it, write it down.

4. Purchase a SIM (subscriber identity module) card from a different network. You can get a prepaid one for about $20 from a local convenience store as of 2010.

5. Remove the battery and current SIM card from your Motorola RAZR. Insert the new SIM card and replace the battery. Turn your phone on and wait for the message "Enter Subsidy Code" to appear.

6. Type in the unlock code and press "OK." This will cause your phone to restart. Once

it does, the phone's software will be unlocked, allowing you to use it with any GSM carrier (one that uses a SIM card).
