Reformat An Sd Card

SD cards are often used with digital cameras.

Reformatting is a process in which a file system is imposed on a storage device. SD cards are external storage devices used with small electronics, such as cell phones, digital cameras and camcorders. There are two compatible file systems you can format your SD card with: FAT16 and FAT32. FAT16 is the most common and is used with cards that are typically smaller than 2GB. For larger-capacity SD cards, FAT32 may be preferable. Newer electronics perform better with the FAT32 system, while older electronics perform better with FAT16.

Instructions

1. Slide the SD card into the SD slot on your computer or into a card reader that is connected to your computer.

2. Click "Start" and select "Computer" to view all the storage devices on your computer.

3. Right-click the SD card under the Devices With Removable Storage section and select "Format" from the context menu.

4. Click the "File System" drop-down menu. Choose between "FAT," which is the FAT16 format, and "FAT32". Choose "FAT" if you are unsure. You can always reformat the card if the file system is not compatible with your electronic device.

5. Click "Start" at the bottom of the Format window. A warning message tell you that formatting the drive will delete all data. Click "OK" to begin the formatting.
