Use An Iphone With A European Sim Card

Using your domestic iPhone abroad is extremely expensive, but when you purchase a GSM iPhone -- in other words, one that uses an SIM card -- in the United States, it comes "locked" to the AT&T network. Jailbreaking, the procedure that "unlocks" the device for use with other carriers' SIMs, is not authorized by either Apple or AT&T. If you already own an unlocked iPhone, however, and take a trip to Europe with it, insert a foreign carrier's SIM card into it to get a local phone number to use in your destination country.

Instructions

1. Un-bend a paperclip and insert one end into the hole at the top of the iPhone. Push inward until the SIM tray pops up. Remove your existing SIM card and store it someplace safe.

2. Insert the European SIM card face down into the tray. Replace the tray and push it completely into the iPhone.

3. Wait for the iPhone to recognize the European network, at which point the name of the network displays in its upper left corner. Begin making calls, sending text messages and, if your carrier supports it, using the Internet on your iPhone.
