General Packet Radio Service or GPRS is a cell phone data communication service that allows information to be sent between users in packets. It offers a speed between 56 to 114 kbps. It is often called "2.5 G" technology as it enables 2G phones to simulate the services offered by higher end 3G phones.
Features
GPRS Service is widely popular, allowing users to access the internet and download data as they could with a Smartphone. No dial-up modem or wired connection is necessary. GPRS services cost users less than circuit-switched connections as they involve shared usage of data in packets, unlike the latter.
GPRS Classes
GPRS can be subdivided into three sub-classes. Class A GPRS devices enable parallel usage of GPRS and GSM service. Most cell phones released after 2007 have this facility. Class B GPRS devices can access both services, but cannot access both simultaneously. Class C GPRS devices can be connected to either GSM or GPRS service, but not both. In order to access one, the other must be switched off.
GPRS Security
GPRS is more secure than GSM. GPRS includes a wider set of features, such as Identity Confidentiality and Identity Authentication. The primary purpose behind these two features is to prevent intruders encroaching upon other subscribers' paths. Paths are encrypted, with the signals kept only within the network and the device.
