Make Phone Calls Using Your Computer'S Modem

Making phone calls using an Internet connection is a growing consumer trend.

If you are tired of paying monthly phone bills, including fees for long distance and standard monthly service charges, using a phone line connected directly to your computer's Internet modem is an option. Although this does require you to have a high-speed Internet connection (dial-up service is not supported), using an online-based phone service potentially gives you the flexibility to cancel your traditional phone service.

Instructions

1. Connect an Ethernet cable in one of the "Out" ports on the back of the Internet modem. Insert the opposite end of the cable in the "In" port on the back of the Internet phone adapter.

2. Insert the telephone cable in the "Out" port on the Internet phone adapter, then insert the free end of the cable in the "In" port on the telephone.

3. Power on the Internet modem, Internet phone adapter and the telephone.

4. Log on to the Internet and navigate to the Internet phone adapter's main web page. Create an account and fill out the required service information. Enter in your billing account data and submit the content. Once the payment clears, you will receive your new Internet telephone number. It has the same area code as the region where you live and works similarly to a standard land-line phone service. The modem must be on at all times to enable the Internet-based phone service.
