Unlock An At&T Prepaid Cellular Phone

Even though AT&T has locked your phone to their network, freeing yourself is not as hard as it may seem.

We as consumers have a choice regarding how much financial hardship we are willing to put up with when it comes to our cell phone carriers. Companies like AT&T strive to provide the best service for the lowest price but some people may find that another carrier will give them a better deal. When this happens, the only roadblock to making the switch is unlocking the device for use with another carrier. Thankfully, this process is not complicated.

1. Call AT&T and request the unlock code for your phone. Because you purchased the phone at full price without signing a contract, you are entitled to unlock your prepaid device right away. AT&T will ask for the IMEI number, which is located underneath the battery on a white sticker. Once they have this, they will contact the phone's manufacturer to obtain the code and e-mail it to you once they have received it.

2. Place a non-AT&T SIM card into the phone. By using a SIM card from another carrier, the phone will recognize that you are attempting to unlock it and prompt you to enter the special code. If you do not yet have a prepaid SIM card from another carrier, ask a friend to briefly use theirs.

3. Enter the unlock code when prompted. Be very careful to enter this code exactly as it appears in your e-mail. Generally you only have five tries to get it right, so it is better to take your time and enter it correctly the first time.
