Monitor Internet Packets

The Internet requires the use of packets through the TCP/IP protocol.

Internet packets are used to send messages across networks. Every time you visit a website or send an email, your computer is sending and receiving packets. The network routers and TCP/IP protocols break e-mail message and other data into smaller parts which we call bytes. Each of these bytes of packets contain information that ultimately gets rebuilt once it reaches its final destination. Internet packets are monitored to ensure that technicians and engineers are able to check the integrity of network routes. The most common method of packet monitoring is the PING method.

Instructions

1. Click on "Start" at the bottom of your computer screen. Select "All Programs."

2. Click on "Run," located in the Accessories folder. Type "cmd" in the dialog box.

3. Type "ping" in the command prompt line on the Dos screen. Then type the address of the website that you are monitoring in the Internet (e.g. ping www.google.com).
