Use Wifi

Wi-Fi allows you to search the world wide web without wires.

Wi-Fi is the term used to describe wireless networking that allows you to connect to the Internet without plugging your device into the wall. It can be used to connect a computer, PDA, cell phone or any other Wi-Fi-ready device to the Internet. Wi-Fi signals are transmitted using radio waves, which are both received and sent by any device that has a wireless adapter. Using Wi-Fi allows you to have Internet access on the go.

Instructions

1. Determine where you want to use Wi-Fi. Many public places, including cafes and libraries, provide Wi-Fi access for free to their customers, which requires no set up on your part. If you want to use Wi-Fi in your home, you will need a connection to an ISP (Internet service provider) such as a phone line and a wireless transmitter to broadcast the signal such as a router. If your computer does not have wireless capability built in, you will need a wireless USB adapter.

2. Connect to the W-Fi device. The laptop, PDA or cell phone should automatically attempt to connect to the Internet because these are Wi-Fi-ready devices. When you install the USB adapter for non-Wi-Fi-ready devices, then it will search for your router and attempt to connect automatically, as well.

3. You may have to give a password. When your computer attempts to connect to the wireless network, it may pop up a dialogue box requesting a password. If you are using free Wi-Fi in a public place, you will have to ask what this password is. If you're at home, it should be the password that you set up with your router.

4. If you're having trouble connecting, check to see if the SID transmission on your router is turned off for security reasons. This makes it so that the Wi-Fi signal does not automatically show up in your connections display. If you know the network name, you can manually connect to the network. Right click on the wireless network icon on the lower right-hand side, and click on "View Available Wireless Networks." Select the available network (it may be listed as "Unknown"), and click on "Connect." Provide the network name and key if required.
