Unlock A Flash Phone For A New Provider

Before you can use your cell phone, you need to unlock it.

Your flash phone is a GSM phone, which means you can use it with any network. If it came as a special offer or gift, it may have a lock on it. This lock prevents you from accessing other cell phone networks. You can unlock your phone to use with a new cell phone provider. The copyright office now allows cell phone users to unlock GSM phones, according to the Top Bits website. You may unlock your phone either through your cell phone provider or through a cell phone unlocking website.

Instructions

With Help From Your Cell Phone Provider

1. Enter *#06# on your cell phone's keypad. Press the "Send" key. This number will provide you with your phone's 15-digit IMEI number. Write the number down.

2. Call your cell phone provider. The contact information is either on your last monthly billing statement or on your cell phone provider's website. Ask for an unlock code.

3. Provide your account information. This includes your cell phone number, the model and manufacturer of your cell phone and the IMEI number.

4. Follow the instructions of your cell phone provider. Enter the unlock code into your phone, when prompted. Your cell phone will now access your new provider's network.

Using an Unlocking Website

5. Choose a website or company that provides cell phone unlocking services. Examples include paid services such as GSM Liberty and Unlock it Now, and a free cell phone unlocking service, Unlock Free.

6. Email the company your IMEI number. Alternatively, you may have to mail your locked phone with your IMEI number.

7. Wait for your unlock code. The website or company may send the unlock code through email or snail mail.

8. Follow the instructions that come with your code. Enter the unlock code into your phone, when prompted. Your cell phone should be able to access the network.
