Connect A Gprs

Many phones with a GPRS data connection can be used as tethered modems for a computer.

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a technology that allows cell phones to connect to the Internet using a mobile web browser. When you connect to the GPRS over your phone, you have access to all of the features you can access over your traditional Internet connection including email, web surfing and instant messaging. It is available on Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication cell networks, but because the GPRS technology works in tandem with GSM, it may not be available on other cell networks.

Instructions

1. Make sure your phone can access a GPRS signal. GPRS is available only over phones that can access GSM mobile networks (see Resources).

2. Call your cell phone carrier to get your GPRS settings. Some phones have the settings pre-programmed, while others may require you to input the GPRS dialup number, Access Point Name (APN), user ID, password, IP address, DNS address or other advanced settings. These settings are the same for everyone on the network, and not specific to your account. They allow you access to the GPRS network.

3. Connect your phone to your computer. Depending on which phone you have, you may need to use a USB tether or bluetooth or infrared connection. There may be special settings you need to implement for your phone to recognize that it is connecting to the GPRS and your computer at the same time. Some operating systems may require special software or settings to recognize the phone as a modem. Android phones offer a wireless tether software application for users with root access. You can skip this step if you only want to access the GPRS on your phone's web browser.

4. Connect your phone to the GPRS signal. You may need to input settings first before you can access the signal. You may need to open a webpage on the phone for it to recognize the data connection.
