BMW produces a range of cars from hatchbacks to SUVs. All cars come supplied with a remote-and-key operated locking system and immobilizer. In the event that the keys are locked in the car, trunk or simply lost while the car is locked, then you will need a replacement key. This can be highly inconvenient if you have items in the car you need to access quickly. A special plastic "lockout" key can be bought from BMW to be used in these situations to open the door locks.
Instructions
1. Contact your local BMW dealership. BMW dealerships can be found by visiting the BMW website and entering your ZIP code and state. A list of nearby dealerships will be displayed. Contact the dealership by telephone or personal visit.
2. Explain to the dealership that you would like to purchase a lockout key.
3. Provide the dealer with your BMW model and year. Provide the vehicle identification number (VIN) and your proof of ownership. Purchase the key from the dealer. As of 2011, the cost varies from $40 to $60.
