The Best Dir655 Settings For Skype

The Best DIR655 Settings for Skype

The D-Link DIR-655 wireless router offers 802.11n connectivity and a number of other features, such as intelligent Quality of Service (QoS) to deliver superior Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) connectivity. There are configuration options in this router that can improve Skype connections. The administrator interface for this router is available through your web browser at a default address (http://192.168.0.1), and you login with a default user name of "admin" and no password.

Connection

The best Skype bandwidth is achieved through a computer that is hardwired to the D-Link DIR-655 router with an Ethernet cable. The throughput over wired Ethernet far exceeds that of Wi-Fi. As this is a wireless router, you are likely to want to connect to it using Wi-Fi. Enable 802.11n on your computer, which is the fastest of the available wireless protocols for this router. By default, the DIR-655 supports 802.11n wireless.

Wireless Security

Enable WPA2-type wireless security to ensure that you are using the most secure and robust protocol to route your wireless packets. Login to the administrator interface of the router and then choose "SETUP" from the top menu options. Select "WIRELESS SETTINGS" on the left, and then choose "WPA-Personal" for Security Mode and "Auto (WPA or WPA2)" for WPA Mode.

Quality of Service

The D-Link DIR-655 router supports Quality of Service (QoS), and if you enable this feature it will improve the quality of Skype packets. Login to the router through the administrator interface. Select "Advanced" options at the top and then "QoS Engine" on the left and check the boxes next to "Enable Qos Engine" and "Automatic Uplink Speed" to enable QoS on the router.
