Why Does My Ipod Say Format Error

Turning on an iPod to find a message reading "format error" is a frustrating experience, but it does not necessarily spell disaster. A few small adjustments can help you diagnose the issue and may offer possible solutions.

Significance

An iPod format error indicates that there is an issue with either the firmware running on the iPod or the actual iPod hardware itself (the hard drive and/or memory). Firmware issues can often be resolved by the iPod owner, while a hardware issue generally requires professional help.

Identification

Each iPod generation has its own way of letting you know something is wrong. The earlier versions will display a folder with an exclamation point or an iPod with a sad face if something is wrong. Newer iPods (the Touch, Nano, and Classic) will show an error message when it is plugged into the USB port of a computer; this message will usually be displayed on the computer screen.

Effects

Effects of formatting errors for iPods include an inability to charge or sync data (files, songs, movies) to the iPod, sudden loss of data or even an iPod that refuses to boot up (also known as a "bricked" iPod). If you suspect your iPod is acting unusually check the support pages at Apple.com for help diagnosing your particular issue.

Solution

For iPod format error and other issues, Apple recommends making sure that the iPod software (iTunes) you use on your computer is updated to the most recent version. Then connect your iPod to the computer and use the "restore" button to return the iPod to its factory settings. Be aware that restoring your iPod will result in complete loss of any games, music and videos you have on it.

Considerations

If your iPod still will not play after restoring it, or if it refuses to sync with your USB drive, the final option is to seek professional help. Contact a nearby Apple Store and arrange for your iPod to be sent in for repairs. Remember that if your iPod is no longer covered under warranty you will be liable for the repair charges.
