Calling your friends and family overseas on a regular basis can become expensive over time. You can save money by using your computer to make free international calls. Many applications and online services are available that allow you to make direct computer-to-computer calls using Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, technology. The technology digitizes a voice call and transfers it over the Internet. To use the technology, your computer must have an applicable microphone and speaker.
Instructions
EvaPhone
1. Go to the EvaPhone website, then click the "Free Minutes" tab on the Phone box in the middle of the page.
2. Click the letter from the alphabet at the top of the box that is the first letter of the country that you want to call.
3. Scroll down the list of countries, then click on the country that you want to call. The amount of time that is allotted for the free international call is displayed next to the country.
4. Click the "Phone" tab, then dial the number of the person that you want to call. The free international phone call lasts as long as the time displayed next to the country you selected.
Skype
5. Go to the Skype website, then click the "Get Skype" button to download the application to your computer.
6. Double-click the downloaded Skype file, then follow the installation wizard's instructions to install the software.
7. Launch Skype, then select the Skype contact from another country that you want to call. Click the "Call" button to call the person. The other person must have the Skype application active on his computer to receive the call.
Yahoo! Messenger
8. Go to the Yahoo! Messenger website, then click the "Download Now" button to save the Yahoo! Messenger file to your computer.
9. Double-click the file to open the installation wizard, then follow the directions to install the Yahoo! Messenger software.
10. Launch Yahoo! Messenger, then sign in to your Yahoo! account.
11. Select the friend from the other country that you want to call from the contact list. The Instant Messenger window for the contact opens.
12. Click the "Call" button to call the other person's computer. The other person must be signed in to Yahoo! Messenger to receive the request to answer your call.
