Use Routers

Connect more than one computer to the same Internet source.

Routers are networking devices that allow you to connect computers in a local area network to the Internet. Routers with ports for several RJ-45 Ethernet connections allow you to connect more than one computer to a single Internet source. Commercial routers have software that begins working the moment you connect devices to it, so to use a router, you must be able to do three things: plug the router into a power outlet, plug the router into an Internet source, and connect the router to computers.

Instructions

1. Plug the router power adapter into a wall outlet, then attach the power cable to the router. Green lights on the front or back of the router indicate that the device is being powered.

2. Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the Internet sources, such as a DSL or cable modem. This device is provided by your Internet service provider as a subscriber service.

3. Insert the second end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled "Internet" or "1" on your router. This is the first port from the left when viewing the row of Ethernet ports on the back of the router. A green light on the front of the router turns on when this connection is made.

4. Insert another Ethernet cable into the first available port on the router, then plug the other end of the cable into a computer or laptop. A green light indicates there is a connection between the router and the computer. Repeat this step for additional computers.

5. Open a web browser on your computer and type the following in the address bar: "http://192.168.1.1". Then press "Enter" on the keyboard. The administration page for your router in the browser page. Alternatively, the administration page may be "http://192.168.0.1". The address is listed in your product documentation.

6. Enter the username and password for your router administration web page, if prompted. Default username and passwords are provided with your product guide book. The administration page allows you to set various options for your router. Basic settings include changing the username and password to the admin page, turning on Wi-Fi (if you have a wireless router), and setting a Wi-Fi name and access code.

7. Ensure that your connected computers can access the Internet by browsing to a website.
