Set Up Twoway Sound Systems

A two-way sound system doesn't always need to have two speakers.

The quality of your speakers -- not the number of them -- is what determines whether you can set up a two-way sound system. The common misconception is that a two-way system has two speakers, a three-way system has three speakers and so on. But the number of "ways" is defined by the number of frequency ranges that your speakers can cover. Two-way speakers have one or more high-frequency drives (tweeters) and one or more low-frequency drives (woofers). You can either use one amplifier, two amplifiers or two channels of a multi-channel amplifier to power up a two-way speaker.

Instructions

Single-Amp Wiring

1. Locate the input terminals on the speaker. If there are only two terminals, the speaker can only be connected in a single-amp mode.

2. Connect one end of the positive and negative wires to the adequate terminals on your amplifier.

3. Connect the positive and negative wires to the positive and negative terminals on the speaker. If the speaker has four terminals (needed for bi-amping) you can connect the wires to any pair of terminals. However, make sure the metal plates that connect the positive terminals together and the negative terminals together are in place, so both speaker drives get audio signal.

Bi-Amp Wiring

4. Locate the input terminals on the speaker and make sure there are four terminals. If the speaker only has two terminals, it cannot be bi-amped.

5. Remove the metal plates that connect the terminal pairs together.

6. Connect a pair of wires to the amplifier or amplifier channel that will be used to power the highs. Connect the other end to the upper terminals on the speaker.

7. Connect the second pair of wires to the second amplifier or to the amplifier channel used to power the lows. Connect the other end to the lower terminals on the speaker.
