Uses For Bluetooth

Bluetooth data can move through walls without resistance.

Bluetooth is a format for wireless data transfer between electronic devices. The technology was first developed in the late 1990s by the mobile phone manufacturer Ericsson. Bluetooth has exploded in popularity since its creation and can be found today in computers, mobile phones, stereo speakers, televisions, MP3 players and dozens of other electronics. Most Bluetooth devices transfer data between each other at rate of 375 kilobytes per second. The data uses radio frequencies as the vehicle for transfer. Bluetooth can be used for mobile phone headsets, streaming music to a home stereo, streaming photos to a television, and operating a wireless keyboard.

Wireless Headset

Bluetooth is widely used for wireless headsets designed for mobile phones. Most Bluetooth-enabled phones will automatically recognize a Bluetooth headset within a 30-foot vicinity of the device. The user can then choose to make the headset the default receiver for the phone. Users can clip their mobile phone to their pants, then place the headset on their ears. This allows for a hands-free approach to talking on the phone. Some cell phone owners use their Bluetooth headsets in the car while driving, allowing them to keep both hands on the wheel.

Music Streaming

Many MP3 music players like the iPod touch come with a built-in Bluetooth mechanism. This allows users to stream music from their players to other Bluetooth-enabled stereo systems in cars or homes. iPod owners can create customized audio playlists and the stereo will play each song in succession. Some Bluetooth laptop owners will stream Internet radio stations to a home stereo for party music.

Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

Many people have used wireless keyboards or mouses before. They may not realize however that they were utilizing Bluetooth technology. Wireless keyboards transmit small bits of data to a Bluetooth receiver inside the computer body, which the computer translates into digital commands on the screen. Wireless mouses also sends out small packets of data the computer then translates into movements on the display.

Stream Photos to Television

Many television manufacturers like Vizio now install Bluetooth receivers inside their HD televisions. The Bluetooth receiver allows users to display photos they might have saved on their Bluetooth phones. Some laptops like the Sony Vaio include Bluetooth and users can stream a photo slidesa TV with slideshow music.
