Verizon Mms Malware Issues

Malware is often disguised as something innocent in order to prompt users to trustingly open files that will infect their mobile phones and computers. Verizon users have experienced issues with malware in the past and should be vigilant in preventing its spread.

MMS Defined

The term "MMS" is short for Multimedia Messaging Service. MMS messages can contain pictures, sound files and videos as well as text characters. Verizon customers can use MMS to share multimedia on their devices with other mobile phone and PC users. Unfortunately, if their phones have become infected with malware, users could unknowingly spread viruses as well.

PC Problems

PC users have reported the receipt of malware disguised as Verizon MMS messages in their email. The file (titled "VerizonMMS.4837192") may look innocuous to the untrained eye but when opened, exposes a user's computer to a Trojan virus. Once the virus takes root, it then attempts to download even more malware from the Web.

Propogation Prevention

Whether using a mobile phone or a PC, users should always take great care when deciding to open MMS messages. Consider the source of the MMS and perhaps confirm with the user that they deliberately sent the message out. If the user did not send the MMS, delete the file without opening it right away.
