AMR stands for "Adaptive Multi-Rate compressed audio." It is an audio format that is often used to encode human speech. Generally, the only thing that will play an AMR file is a program that was specifically designed to do so. This means that to play this file with a device like an MP3 player, or with your computer's normal MP3 player, you'll need to perform a conversion from AMR to MP3 first.
Website Conversion
One quick way to convert AMR to MP3 is by using a conversion website. An example of a good one is Media-Convert (see Resources). You can click on the "Browse" button on the top of the web page, which will let you find your AMR file. If you open this file here, it will appear in the text box labeled "File." The box marked "Input Format" should automatically detect your format type and list it as AMR. Or you can do this manually by selecting it in the drop-down menu.
Downloadng the Converted File
The"Output Format" box on this page has a drop-down menu where you can select "MP3." There's a button in the bottom-right corner of the page labeled "I accept the terms" that will begin the online conversion. Since this is an audio conversion, as long as your AMR file isn't more than 10 MB or so, the conversion shouldn't take more than a minute. Once it completes, you should be able to click on a download link to your new MP3 file that will let you download it.
Program Conversion
An alternative to using a website is to download a free conversion program. An example is Format Factory (see Resources). If you install this program, you can use it at any time to convert AMR to MP3, which is an option you won't always have with the web converter, since it requires an Internet connection. The "Audio" tab in the main program window has a few buttons that give you conversion options. The "All to MP3" button will let you add a file, such as an AMR file, to the main page where the "Convert" button will let you convert the file.
