Definition Of Unlocking A Phone

Unlocking cell phones frees them of restrictions placed by the original manufacturer.

Cell phone carriers typically sell cell phones that are set up with restricted features and abilities. However, many users overcome these restrictions by using a process known as unlocking a phone.

Definition

Unlocking a phone means to release the restrictions that are put on it by manufacturers. This is primarily done for the purpose of allowing the phone to be used with other carriers.

Why Unlock?

Unlocking your phone allows you to take your phone to another network, which it may have been previously disallowed from, as long as that network is compatible with your phone.

Unlocking Procedure

Typically, one must enter a code using a hidden menu in order to unlock the phone. However, some programs exist that unlock a phone using hardware.

Legality

It is usually not illegal to unlock your phone; however, if you do so, you may void your phone's warranty.

Warnings

After unlocking your phone, you may not be able to access all of the new carrier's features due to the phone being originally set up for another network.
