Fix A Rootkit Virus

All PC's are vulnerable to malware or malicious software. Malicious software is designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner's knowledge such as viruses and spyware. A rootkit virus is a type of malware that hides the activities of other viruses from being detected by antivirus software, compromising operating system files and seriously damaging your PC. If your PC is infected by a rootkit virus, you may be able to fix it with a system restore, but the only way to truly eliminate the virus, unfortunately, is to back up any uninfected data and reinstall your Windows OS.

Instructions

Fixing a Rootkit Virus with System Restore

1. Click on the Start menu.

2. Locate the "Systems Tools" folder under Accessories.

3. Double-click on "System Restore." Wait for the system restore to load, and follow the directions carefully. When prompted to enter a restore date, choose a date before the PC was infected. Allow the System Restore to run completely.

4. Update all Windows software and Virus software. If the System Restore was successful, update your Windows software and your virus software for the latest patches and virus definitions.

5. Save all important documents and files to a separate storage device other than the infected PC.

6. Insert your Windows installation disk into your optical drive and restart your PC.

7. Press the key designated for the BOOT Menu during the POST process. Typically the "F8" key is used to enter the BOOT Menu. When asked to choose a drive to Boot from, choose the optical drive (D: drive).

8. Reinstall Windows. Follow the Windows installation instructions carefully and make sure to have your "25-character product key" ready.

9. Update all Windows software and Virus software. After Windows is installed, update your Windows software and your virus software for the latest patches and virus definitions.
