Nokia N97 Alternatives

In an industry where today's hottest model is tomorrow's castoff, mobile phones such as the Nokia N97 have a limited amount of time before their ability to compete with other models wanes. Released in 2009, the N97 has its hands full competing with newer models that are proving to be viable, if not preferable, alternatives to the device. Apple, Samsung, Motorola and HTC have all released similar phones that are giving the N97 a run for its money.

Apple

Known mostly for its computers, Apple made a splash in the mobile-phone industry when it introduced the first-generation iPhone in 2007. At the time of publication, the iPhone is in its fourth generation as the iPhone 4 and is available in 16GB and 32GB models. The iPhone 4 does not come with a card slot for expanded memory, but does feature a 5-Megapixel camera that is capable of recording high-definition video. The phone also features a secondary camera that gives the device videoconferencing capability. Released in 2010, the iPhone 4 accesses the 2G and 3G wireless networks and is Wi-Fi compatible.

Samsung

Released in 2011, the Samsung Galaxy S II features a 4.3-inch Super Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode, or Super AMOLED, capacitive touch screen that displays more than 16 million colors at 480 by 800 pixels of resolution. Touch-capacitive screens are designed to react to the electromagnetism emitted by human flesh and will not respond to other stimuli, such as a stylus. The Galaxy S II comes with 1GB of internal memory and supports up to 32GB of expanded memory in its built-in microSD card slot.

Motorola

The Motorola i1 was released in 2010 and comes with a variety of features, including a built-in GPS application. The phone's assisted-GPS application uses satellite and cellular tower signals to provide navigational functionality, which includes a location-based services feature. The LBS feature provides contact information for nearby emergency and commercial services, such as restaurants and police stations. LBS also enables third parties, such as employers and parents, to track the whereabouts of the phone. The i1 is also capable of geotagging, a process that embeds map and GPS coordinate data into each image captured by the phone's camera.

HTC

HTC's EVO 4G, released in 2010, is equipped with WiMAX technology, which works in the same manner as its Wi-Fi feature, but extends wireless connectivity from up to 300 feet, as offered by Wi-Fi, to up to 30 miles. The EVO 4G also features an 8-Megapixel camera that records high-definition video and has a variety of camera features, including auto focus and digital zoom, that give it added photographic functionality. The phone also comes with a built-in media player that supports an assortment of audio and video file formats, including MP3, MPEG4, AAC and H.264.
