Released in November 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone is a quad-band, multiple-network device that comes with a variety of cellular and multimedia features. The device's touchscreen and picture-taking capabilities, coupled with its other functions, earned the phone a "Very Good" rating from CNET Reviews, an electronics review website.
Touchscreen
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone features a 3.2-inch thin-film transistor resistive touchscreen that displays more than 16 million colors at 360 by 640 pixels of resolution. Unlike capacitive touchscreens, which only respond to the electromagnetism emitted by human flesh, the 5800 XpressMusic's touchscreen reacts to direct pressure from a variety of stimuli, including styluses, fingertips and eraser tips. Because the device's touchscreen employs resistive technology, it is more susceptible to accidental activation and navigation processes than capacitive technology.
Pictures and Videos
Equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone takes still pictures at up to 2,048 by 1,536 pixels of resolution and is capable of recording video at 640 by 480 pixels. The device also comes with a front-facing secondary camera that gives the phone videoconferencing capability. The 5800 XpressMusic also provides geotagging, a process that embeds GPS and map coordinates into each picture or video captured by the phone. This feature is especially useful if you are unsure of your precise location or want to return to the exact spot you previously took a picture or recorded video.
Navigational Functions
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device comes with an assisted-GPS application, which uses a combination of cellular tower and satellite signals to provide navigational functionality. The A-GPS also offers a location-based services feature that provides contact information for nearby emergency and commercial services, such as hospitals, police stations, gas stations and restaurants. The phone's location-based-services feature also allows third parties, such as parents or employers, to track the location of the device through a personal computer.
Miscellaneous Functions
In addition to its picture, touchscreen and navigational features, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone provides basic cellular functionality, including digital voice calling and multimedia and text messaging. The device connects to the 2G and 3G wireless networks using Global System for Mobile Communications technology, making the phone compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T, the only national providers that operate GSM networks. The phone also supports mobile email through connections to a Post Office Protocol or Internet Message Access Protocol server and is able to support instant messaging through an Internet connection to a third-party IM client, such as Yahoo. The device comes with an assortment of Bluetooth profiles, or modes, that enable you to perform a variety of wireless tasks, including sharing files, placing and receiving wireless calls and connecting to the Internet.
