Register A New Vehicle

Registering your new vehicle with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is a legal requirement in the UK. This is to ensure that your vehicle meets the required safety standards and complies with UK Road Vehicles Regulations and to deter vehicle-related crime. Usually the dealer notifies the DVLA of the purchase and handles the registration process for you. If not, you can apply for registration yourself.

Instructions

1. Inform your DVLA local office as soon as the new vehicle comes into your possession, within 14 days if you have imported the vehicle. You can find the contact details of your DVLA local office on the DVLA website.

2. Have all required documents ready for vehicle registration. You will need valid personal identification, address, vehicle purchase, vehicle insurance, vehicle tax and import documents.

3. Fill the appropriate HM Revenue and Customs form for an imported vehicle. You can find information regarding this on the DVLA website and download forms from the HM Revenue and Customs website. You can also contact HM Revenue and Customs Advice Service on 011 (+44) 0845 010 9000.

4. Get a Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) certificate stating that your imported vehicle has undergone modifications for use on UK roads. In absence of this certificate, go for a SVA testing.

5. Use application form V55/4 for registering your new vehicle. To declare the newness of an imported vehicle, fill out form V267. You can get both these forms from the DVLA local office or order them from the DVLA website.

6. Make sure you have filled all the forms correctly, attach the required documents and submit your application.

7. Pay the specified registration fee. Make check or postal order payable to "DVLA Swansea" or Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. You can also pay by credit card or debit card.

8. Expect a vehicle inspection. The DVLA local office may want to make sure it meets approved vehicle standards.

9. Wait about six weeks after your application. Check to make sure all the details are correct. If you have provided a prepaid self addressed, special delivery envelope, you will get the documents by special delivery.
