Get An Unlisted Phone Number

Being unlisted can help avoid unwanted calls.

Many people today are relying on cell phones as their main phone rather than having an actual home phone. Regardless, some people prefer not to be listed in the phonebook and keep their number more private. There are many services available on the Internet that allow people to try to find unlisted numbers for a fee, but for the most part, when you are unlisted, it is harder to track down your phone number.

Instructions

1. Call your phone service provider. Each one may have different ways of dealing with ensuring your phone number is unlisted. Some charge fees, while others will make your number unlisted free of charge.

2. Contact your local yellow or white pages or other directory you may have affiliations with. Make sure you tell all of those organizations to keep your number private or unlisted. This will also help keep your number from getting out. Once your number is unlisted by the phone company, most third-party groups will not have access to it. However, if you have previously listed your number with a directory, you may have to wait for the next edition to come out so you can unlist it in that one as well.

3. Avoid using credit check companies unless absolutely necessary. These credit check companies will ask for your phone number, turn it over to a lender, and through the database your number may be leaked to a third party which can make it available on a website that searches unlisted phone numbers.

4. Use a custom calling services offered by some phone companies. These services are purchased by an individual so someone with an unlisted number cannot contact him unless he enters a code or says his name.
