Install Skype & Needed Hardware

A headset with a microphone is necessary for VoIP calling.

Skype is a popular Voice Over Internet Protocol program that allows you to call people's telephones from your computer using a headset. You can add Skype credits to your account, similar to a prepaid cellphone plan. Skype has to be installed on your computer and your headset has to be configured to accept sound.

Instructions

1. Download Skype from the Skype website.

2. Navigate to your "Downloads" folder and double-click on "skypesetup.exe" to run the installation program. Select your language and check the box to agree to the Terms of Service, then click "Install."

3. Click the icon on your desktop to run Skype. Click the "Don't Have a Skype Account" check box under the username. Input your name, desired username and password in the boxes. You can have uppercase letters, lowercase letters and the underscore; you cannot have spaces in your username.

4. Accept the Terms and Conditions, click "Next" and enter the information. Click the "Sign In" button.

5. Navigate to the main menu and click the green telephone button near "Skype Test Call."

6. Speak clearly into the microphone to record your voice. You should hear what you said played back. If not, right-click the volume icon on your taskbar, select "Recording Devices," click on your microphone, select "Properties" then click "Levels." Slide the lever to the right to boost the microphone's volume.
